Friday 15 July 2016. For today’s walk we caught a bus from Selva to start at Passo Sella (7,100ft). It was only 4c and I was dressed inappropriately in shorts and a short sleeve shirt. I quickly added a thin pullover that I had in my bag and my lightweight waterproof. Even wearing all of my clothing it was still freezing and I was glad that we had a steep uphill start which warmed me up a little.
We were walking on the Friedrich August Weg which is a high level contouring path around the back of Sassolungo and the side of Sasso Piatto. I say contouring but there was a great deal of up and down on this 8 mile route with a total ascent of about 2,000ft and a total descent of about 2,500ft. It was made doubly difficult with an uphill start and an uphill finish.
We stopped for lunch at the Rigugio Sasso Piatto and this came as a great relief as we were able to get out of the chilly wind and to buy some warm drinks. After lunch we descended about 1,000ft before making the final climb of 500ft to the Monte Pana ski lifts which took us steeply down to St Christina from where we caught the bus back to Selva. This was an “easier” walk but I think that we all agreed that it was pretty hard and was certainly enough for me.
