Saturday 25 July 2015. I met up with Jacqui today for a walk around the hills overlooking Macclesfield. Our meeting point for this 9 mile walk with 1,850ft of ascent was the somewhat remote Hanging Gate pub. I’d been there before when doing a walk up Shuttlingsloe; I think with Karen & Barry. Our route took us on along a series of undulating paths, many of which seemed to have been infrequently walked. A lack of concentration on my part meant that we went the wrong way on 3 occasions although these only added a few hundred yards to our walk.
We stopped briefly for a coffee break in the sunshine at Mareknowles before making the near 600ft climb to the high point of our walk at Croker Hill (1,320ft) which was topped off with a BT communications tower. It is said that Snowden can be seen from Croker Hill but that wasn’t possible today although to the north we could see across Stockport & Manchester to the distant Pennines. As we descended from Croker Hill we could see that there were rain showers not too far away to the west but these stayed away from us other than a few odd drops.
Having lost over 600ft on the descent from Croker Hill, we then had a final climb of nearly 400ft to get back to the cars and the pub where we finished off with lunch.
