Mellbreak

Today’s walk was a 7.25 mile climb of Mellbreak with a total ascent of 1,950ft. We set off from Loweswater village but took the wrong path for a short distance. This served as something of a blessing in disguise as we returned to the Kirkstile Inn for toilets and coffee. Soon after starting out again, the heavens opened but we were able to shelter under trees. Had we been out on the open fell then we would have got a real soaking.

The ascent of Mellbreak was 1,300ft almost all of which was straight up over a scree slope or with minor scrambling. Once on the top the going became considerably easier before a descent down grassy slopes to visit Scale Force waterfall.

The return route was a delightful walk alongside Crummock Water in bright sunshine with another visit to the Kirkstile Inn for drinks taken in their beer garden.
